A Fairfield man was killed in a shootout near Liberty Elementary School in Ottumwa.
According to the Wapello County Attorney’s Office, two Ottumwa men have been charged with burglary, robbery, and attempted murder for their roles in the incidents that took place in Ottumwa Friday. Three armed men forced their way into a residence at 831 South Lillian and stole items from the residents. One person at the home was shot but survived, and is recovering in the hospital. The three armed men then fled the scene on foot, and were involved in a shootout with police near Liberty Elementary School. During the shootout, 35-year-old David Roy White of Fairfield was killed. An autopsy of White will be conducted by the Iowa Office of the State Medical Examiner.
Thirty-two year-old Michael Paul Bibby of Ottumwa was injured in the exchange of gunfire, was transported for medical treatment and is recovering. Following a manhunt that lasted several hours, the third suspect identified, 23-year-old Dalton Wayne Cook of Ottumwa, was captured and arrested on outstanding warrants. Bibby and Cook have each been charged with burglary in the first degree, robbery in the first degree, and six counts of attempt to commit murder. Bond for each of them has been set at $800,000 cash only. This is an ongoing investigation being conducted by the Ottumwa Police Department and the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation. Additional information will be released as it becomes official.
