A free summer lunch program in Kalona is offering a presentation on bike safety this Friday.
Kalona Food for All, which serves free lunches on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from noon-1 p.m. at the Kalona Methodist Church, will have Iowa State Patrol Safety Education Officer Jason Marlow speak about bike safety; including helmet demonstrations, maintenance, signaling, and rules of the road. Organizer Amy Spencer says this event was proposed by Food for All volunteers who were concerned about kids who ride their bikes to the church and their safety, “We’re really excited about it because we are aware that there are some kids in town who really aren’t learning how to be safe on their bikes. And it’s especially close to me because one of my favorite little friends, a first grader, was hit by a car just this spring and thank god he’s fine at least physically. And so I’m excited about us doing it just to keep more kids safe.”
Spencer adds that adults could learn from this demonstration too, as people of all ages are welcome to eat at the free lunch. Participants can make their own meal at the Kalona Methodist Church anytime from noon-1 p.m. and the presentation starts at 12:30 p.m. A freewill donation is accepted to benefit Food for All.
