Anyone between the ages of one and 18 can get a free lunch on weekdays in Washington this summer.

The Washington School District hosts the free program from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Friday at Stewart and Lincoln Elementary Schools. Stewart cook Teri Kleese says you don’t have to go to school in Washington to participate, it’s open to anyone. Stewart’s lunch program has been averaging about 125 people each day, although last week they had one day with 170 lunches served. When asked what it’s like to know that kids are getting a healthy meal even though school is on break she said, “It’s rewarding, you know, we give up our summer for a reason, because there are some that just this is it for them and their day. And we do allow seconds at 12:30 p.m., they can come back and get a second meal, and we have some that do.”

Lunches include milk, an unlimited salad bar with fresh vegetables, a side dish, entree and dessert. Adults are also welcome and their meal costs $3.70.
