Safety concerns were brought up at this week’s Keota City Council meeting after a recent fire at a local business.

On May 14th crews extinguished an LP tank on fire at McDonald Bone Yard and Auto Recycling. The business is near the Keota Community School buildings. Citizen Jim Tinnes asked the city council for their view on the business. Council member Matt Greiner said he would like to see the business made safer, and said he talked with the business owners and was told the LP bottles have been removed. Business owner Michelle McDonald says the business no longer accepts LP bottles, and they have arranged for Safety-Kleen to pick up recycled gasoline. As for any council decision, they are waiting to hear back from the city attorney on what the city can and cannot do. Mayor Tony Cansler said he talked to Iowa Department of Natural Resources Environmental Specialist Terry Jones, who had walked through the property after the fire. Jones recommended speaking with the State Fire Marshal to see what options there are for the city.
