The Iowa Mennonite School baseball and softball teams continue their work on the road in the Southeast Iowa Superconference Friday when they travel to Pekin.
The IMS baseball team is 0-1 on the year after a season opening 4-2 loss at Louisa-Muscatine on Tuesday. Blake Bontrager went five innings in the contest, taking the loss, giving up three hits and three runs. Reggie Borntrager had a hit, run and an RBI for IMS. Pekin is 5-1 on the year, beating Highland Thursday 14-5 behind three RBI each from Ryan Stansberry and Caleb Comstock, while Skyler Juhl went four and two thirds on the hill, giving up four hits and three runs. On the season the Panthers are hitting .301, led by Tanner Bainbridge at .565 with three doubles and eight RBI. Comstock and Keaton Baayen lead the Panthers on the mound, each 1-0 records and zero ERAs. These two teams met a year ago with IMS taking a 3-0 win.
In the girls contest, IMS enters play with an overall record of 0-2, following a 7-0 loss to Louisa-Muscatine in which Falcon pitcher Isabelle True threw a perfect game against the IMS offense. On the year, Iowa Mennonite has one hit, it belongs to catcher Avery Blauvelt. In the circle, IMS is led by Suzanna Yoder with three innings of work, seven hits allowed and an ERA of 21. Pekin is 5-4 on the year, beating Highland 10-1 last time out. The Panthers are led this year by Zoey Wright with her .594 average, 12 runs scored and seven driven in. Cari Duwa leads Pekin in the circle, working 30 innings with a 2.05 ERA and 17 strike outs. These two teams met last season with IMS falling 8-2. Action in both games begins at 7p.m. Friday in Packwood.
