The Washington Demon softball team opened up the home part of their schedule Wednesday night hosting Iowa City Liberty in a non-conference doubleheader.

Liberty took game one by a 7-3 score, the Demons rebounded to take game two 17-7 in just five innings. In a pair of contests heard on KCII, Washington started strong in the first match up, scoring three times in the first, including a two out, two RBI single from Alexa Mitchell to take the early 3-0 advantage. The score stayed that way until the fourth when Liberty touched up Demon starter Molly Sparks for four runs to wrestle the lead away. The Lightning added a pair of insurance runs in the fifth and one more in the sixth to take a 7-3 lead. The Demons best chance for a comeback was in the sixth when they loaded the bases but were unable to capitalize. Sparks took the loss for the Demons in the circle, going all seven innings, surrendering seven runs on 12 hits while striking out four. At the plate Alexa Mitchell had a pair hits and drove in two. Haylee Wilson also had two hits.

The Demons dominated the night cap, taking home a 17-7 victory. Liberty opened the game with a pair of runs in the first, only to see Washington answer with three in the bottom half to take a 3-2 advantage. The teams continued to see-saw as Liberty scored to tie the game, only to see Washington match that with a run of their own. It was 4-3 Demons going to the fourth when the Lightning put together a big four run inning. Trailing again, Washington answered, emphatically. The Demons sent 12 batters to the plate in an eight run bottom of the fourth to go up 12-7 and kept their foot on the gas ending the game early via the mercy rule. Each Demon in the starting lineup had a hit and eight of the nine spots in the order scored a run. Alexa Mitchell got the win for Washington working five innings. With the split, the Demons are now 1-3 on the year as they get ready for Fort Madison on Friday.
