The Washington Concert Association is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year and a Washington native will be taking the stage this weekend.

Jazz singer Sue Ellen Hegstrom will be returning to Washington from the Baltimore, Maryland, and Washington, D.C. area to perform. The alto shares what the audience will hear, “Oh, they’ll hear a little bit of everything. It is billed as an evening of music and laughter, and that’s what it will be. There will be touches of humor, talking about what kinds of things I’ve done through the years. And I’ll be working with some Washington-area musicians, and also the second half will be with a jazz trio out of the Iowa City-Cedar Rapids area called Traffic Jam. We’ll just be doing a lot of different styles. And I’ll be telling some stories about the music itself, and just about what it’s like to keep up with music even without a list of Grammys as long as my arm or anything like that. I think it will be a lot of fun.”

She says her first experience as a big band singer was in 1987 with the Washington High School jazz band under direction of Gary McCurdy. The concert will be at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the Washington Area Performing Arts and Events Center. Tickets are $18 for adults, $10 for college students, and free for younger students.
