Kalona and surrounding residents have the opportunity to get rid of unwanted belongings this Saturday during the city’s annual clean up day.

Kalona residents and nonresidents can take household items, building materials, and garbage to the city park from 8-11 a.m. where Johnson County Refuse will accept items in the west parking lot. City Administrator Ryan Schlabaugh explains why they prefer this method over a residence pickup, “We felt that it’s just a little bit cleaner and it’s been well-received by the public here as opposed to throwing it out onto the curb. It’s easier for the hauler and it allows them to bring more equipment down for that day and provide more service to those individuals when they get there. So when you pull up they’ll go ahead and they’ll pick everything out. You really could go through the whole process and never get out of your car.”

Schlabaugh says there is a $20 fee for larger recyclable items such as dishwashers. Johnson County Refuse will not accept hazardous materials that day, but you can set up an appointment to dispose of those materials at the Iowa City Landfill and Recycling Center. If you are unable to get your items to the park, you can set up a pickup time for this Friday by calling the Kalona City Hall at 319-656-2310.
