One more. That’s the number of games that separate the Wapello boys’ basketball team from accomplishing something the program hasn’t seen done since the mid-1990s. The Indians will look to punch their ticket to the state tournament tonight when they face off with Northeast Goose Lake in Muscatine for the class 2A substate final.
Wapello (22-1) qualified for the event after Tuesday night’s district final win over Central Lee 80-71. To show how dominant of a season the Indians have had, that win marks the first of the season by single digits. For a team that hasn’t been tested down the stretch of many games, the Indians kept their composure and got clutch shots from Trenton Massner and Gage Witte to seal the win. The pair will be needed tonight against a Rebel team that only gives up 45 points a contest. Massner leads the Superconference in points with 23 a game while shooting a remarkable 63% from the floor. Keaton Mitchell adds 14 points and nine boards a game.
Northeast Goose Lake (19-5) took home their district title with a 52-30 win over Camanche. Luke Empen led the way for them with 15 points. The senior leads the Rebels with 16 points and 10 rebounds a game on the season. Dawson Stoll cashes in on 13 points a contest. The Rebels finished second in the River Valley Conference North division.
The chance to witness history gets started at 7 p.m. tonight at Muscatine High School. You can hear all the action on 106.1 FM KCII starting with our pregame show at 6:30 p.m.
