The Iowa Mennonite School girls basketball team saw their tremendous tournament run come to an end Friday in the regional semifinal round of the class 1A playoffs as they fell to No. 3 North Mahaska on the road 49-44.
After a back and forth start, the Lady Warhawks built what would be the largest lead for either side on the night at seven and were up 15-9 after one quarter. Through the second quarter things stayed tight with IMS down 23-19 at the break. In the second half, the teams continued to trade blows with Suzanna Yoder scoring 20 of Iowa Mennonite’s 25 second half points. Each team held a lead in the games final frame. Down 41-38 with four minutes left, Yoder knocked down a three to tie the game and give her 1,000 points for her career. In the games final 90 seconds, the Warhawks found a 6-0 run and looked to put things out of reach up 47-41 with under 45 seconds left. IMS got one final chance as Yoder hit a three to pull them back within 47-44. On the play Avery Blauvelt was fouled setting a screen to get Yoder open, awarding the ball back to IMS down just three. Yoder’s game tying attempt was blocked and North Mahaska escaped.
IMS was led on the night by Yoder with 29 points. With the loss, IMS wraps up their season at 5-17. They say good bye to seniors Alyssa Hershberger, Payton Hart, Avery Blauvelt and Angela Marcelino. North Mahaska remains unbeaten at 22-0 and will play for the right to go to state Monday in Grinnell.
