This is a recap of Friday’s action and a preview for day three Saturday at the 2018 Individual State Wrestling Tournament in Des Moines for area athletes:
Class 1A
#9 Mason Dye of Sigourney-Keota fell to #2 Beau Klingensmith of Woodbury Central by fall in the quarterfinals at 106lbs. In the consolation bracket he bounced back to beat #5 Donavon Hanson of Manson Northwest Webster by fall, and then knock off Bryce Shaha of Mount Ayr 10-6. Dye will be in the consolation semifinals today against #6 Brock Dietz of Nashua-Plainfield.
#2 Kaleb Reeves of Sigourney-Keota at 220lbs dropped a 4-3 quarterfinal decision to #5 Zack Santee of Central Springs. In consolation action Reeves pinned Brett Schoenherr of Midland in 37 seconds and then put Chaz Clark of Pleasantville on his back. Reeves will be in the consolation semifinals today against #4 Nicholas Gaes of Alta-Aurelia.
Lone Tree’s Aaron Slaughter fell to #4 Jacob Moore of Denver by 21-10 major decision in his consolation match, wrapping up his state tournament.
Highland’s Brady Hahn dropped his quarterfinal match to Nicholas Martin of Moravia by fall. In consolation action Hahn was beaten by #2 Kory Van Oort of West Sioux 8-2 to end his state tournament run.
#8 WACO’s Cody Crawford dropped his consolation match at 285lbs to #7 Darlyn Marquez of West Sioux by 7-2 decision as his state tournament run comes to an end.
Class 2A
For the Washington Demons at 120lbs Walker Ikerd wrapped up his tournament in Des Moines with a 9-3 loss to #2 Kaden Anderlik of Crestwood. At 170lbs #3 Tristan Westphal-Edwards dropped his quarterfinal match to Paul Ryan of Mount Vernon by 6-5 decision. In the consolation bracket Westphal-Edwards saw his tournament come to an end with a 9-8 loss to #4 Noah Glaser of New Hampton Turkey Valley. At 285lbs Mitchell Huisenga fell to Kobe Clayborne of Sioux City Bishop Heelan Catholic by fall, ending his tournament.
For the Columbus/Winfield-Mt. Union Wildcats. Jared Kadel advances to the state championship match at 106lbs for the second straight season with a quarterfinal win over #6 Jacob Mielke of Pocahontas Area 8-4 and then bested #5 Colby Lillegard of Bondurant-Farrar in the semifinals by fall. Kadel will wrestle #2 Matthew Lewis of Centerville for the state title tonight. At 138lbs, Cam Rice dropped his quarterfinal match to #4 Tanner Probasco of South Tama by fall. In the consolation bracket Rice bounced back to pin Reed Abbas of Clarion-Goldfield before fall to Colby Tool of Prairie City Monroe by fall. Rice will wrestle #7 Brennan Todd of Sioux City Bishop Heelan Catholic today for seventh place.
