As Washington moves forward with building a new fire station, a few homes had to be demolished and one that was expected to be moved will now be taken down.

At Tuesday’s Washington City Council meeting City Administrator Brent Hinson gave an update on the property 208 East Jefferson, explaining that the plan had been for the current residents of 202 East Jefferson to move into the 208 home, once it was relocated. However, costs to move the house were higher than anticipated.

The council agreed to have city staff work with the 202 East Jefferson homeowners and local realtors to find another house and have 208 East Jefferson demolished. Hinson explained it’s the more cost-effective plan and is about a $20,000 savings versus moving the house. Those East Jefferson properties will then be part of the footprint of the new fire station.
