The Washington basketball teams traveled to Keokuk Friday night for a Southeast Conference doubleheader and came up empty handed, as the Chiefs won both contests.

In the girls’ game, despite a great defensive performance for Washington the Chiefs had enough firepower for a 37-28 win. In the first half the Demon defense was taking everything away from Keokuk and only gave up six points heading into the break. The Demons struggled to knock down shots however, and only led 13-6 at half. In the second half Michaela Davis took over for Keokuk, as she scored all of her 23 points in the final two quarters. The Demons had no answer for her and Davis led the Chiefs to the nine-point win. Addison Six led the way for Washington with eight points and Brooke Stout added seven. The Demons fall to 5-11 after the loss and Keokuk improves to 10-6.

In the boys’ game the Demons flirted with a big come from behind win but ultimately fell short losing 53-51. In the first quarter both teams traded blows with Washington having a slight 11-10 advantage. The turning point came when Cale Hobscheidt picked up his third foul of the half and had to sit for the entire second frame. Keokuk was able to capitalize on the height advantage and led 24-17 at the break. Early in the third quarter the Chiefs were red hot from the field to build a 16-point lead. The scrappy Demons would not go away however, as they chipped away at the lead in part by a trio of threes from Blake Hartzler. Washington pushed it to one possession game in the waning moments but came up short and the Chiefs got revenge from an earlier season loss to the Demons. Hartzler finished with a game-high 17 points to lead Washington. Tyjai Mueller also had 17 points for Keokuk. Washington falls to 5-10 and Keokuk improves to 4-13.
