Washington High School speech team members will be sharing their talents this weekend at a showcase.

The event is open to the public and held at the Washington High School auditorium. Speech Coach Robin Flattery says the showcase is a chance for students to display all of their hard work and she highlights a few of the categories, “One of the most popular categories we have right now is the musical theater category, where kids who are kind of into Broadway get to express that. That’s the large group musical theater. And then we also have improv is very popular, all three of our improv groups went through to state. And that is where they make up a five minute scene off the top of their head based on some sort of suggestion. They are going to be either performing scenes or doing games, which are similar to the games you would see on like Whose Line is it Anyway. And then we also have ensemble acting, which is where a group of kids they act together a piece, most of ours are comedy this year.” Also, a short film mockumentary created by two students will be on display. And for the first-time ever the team had students prepare at TV newscast piece that is a throwback to the 1960’s and that will be shown.

The Demon team recently competed at districts and seven groups are advancing to the state contest at Linn-Mar High School. The speech showcase is 2-4 p.m. Sunday (1/28) and is open to the public with a freewill donation, and cookies and coffee will be served in the commons.
