Iowa Mennonite School hosted Highland in a doubleheader Friday night at Hillcrest Union to wrap up the first half of the high school basketball season.
The Highland girls took game one by a 57-33 count. The Huskies had an 8-7 lead after one quarter and were up 20-14 at the break. Highland turned it on in the second half, opening the third quarter on a 7-0 run to take control and stretch their lead to as many as 27 before finishing the win.
Aly Stokes led Highland with a monster game, scoring a career high 29 points. Suzanna Yoder led IMS with 21. Highland closes the first half of the year at 7-2, IMS falls to 1-7.
Things were tight early in the nightcap as well between the boys teams before IMS pulled away for a 71-55 win. Highland got out to a nice start on both sides of the ball and took a 17-12 lead after one quarter. Things stayed tight into the halftime break with the score tied at 28. In the third quarter IMS found another gear, scoring 30 points in the frame, turning that into a 24 point lead and finishing the win.
Mitchell Schmeider led IMS with a monster double double 24 points and 19 rebounds. Cole Ours had 22 for IMS. Zack Lasek had 19 for Highland. Mason McFarland finished with 15 and Trey Lasek 13. IMS goes into Christmas break at 6-1 on the year. Highland is 4-3.
