Greenery and holly can be seen in holiday decorations this season.

Horticulturists with Iowa State University Extension and Outreach share there are some hollies that perform well in Iowa. Meserve hybrid hollies and winterberry can be grown successfully in Iowa. Meserve hybrid hollies have dark, bluish-green foliage and are referred to as blue hollies. The female cultivars produce red fruit and the cultivars grow five to 10 feet tall. When selecting a planting site, choose a protected location like the east side of a building, as they are susceptible to injury from sun and dry winter winds.
Winterberry is a deciduous shrub that grows eight to 10 feet tall and the fruit on the female plants turn bright red in the fall and carry through into winter. It performs best in moist, acidic soils and can be grown in partial shade to full sun.
