Since April, Hawkeye Area Community Action Program (HACAP has provided family harvest supplemental food boxes to 608 households, for a total of 1,332 people served locally.

Washington County Board of Supervisor chairman Richard Young spoke of HACAP’s efforts at Tuesday’s supervisor meeting. Young explained how the 816 food boxes and 280 food vouchers impact the community, “The food boxes value was $14,345.28 and the food vouchers was $2,800, and that is what HACAP has done to help people since April. So, there is a need. If anybody would like to make donations to the food pantry they would greatly appreciate it.

Director of Washington County Public Health Danielle Pettit-Majewski added HACAP is able to purchase food at a low cost, “When they buy food through the reservoir they’re able to spread that dollar much further than we can at our local grocery stores. So what the value is and what the cost is might be a different number. So I think, it’s a $1 to $12 conversion, for every dollars that’s donated they can buy up to $12 worth of food.”

Young adds over the weekend local boy scout troops collected food that was donated, and then delivered it to the food pantry at HACAP.
