Firefighters will be visiting schools this week to educate children about fire prevention.
This week is National Fire Prevention Week and this year’s theme from the National Fire Protection Agency is “Every Second Counts: Plan 2 Ways Out!”. Residents are encouraged to have an escape plan with two ways out of their homes. Also, the NFPA says to remember to replace batteries in smoke alarms annually, as two-thirds of fire deaths happen in homes with no smoke alarms. There have been 29 lives lost in fires in Iowa so far this year, including one in Washington in January.Washington firefighters will visit the schools Tuesday and Wednesday.
