A business like approach allowed the Demon softball team to cruise past Central DeWitt on Thursday in the first round of the class 4A regionals by defeating the Sabers 7-2.

If the Demons had any postseason jitters heading into the contest it didn’t take long for them to disappear as the Washington offense went right to work cashing in on early opportunities. Despite being in Washington, the Demons were the away team due to a pregame coin flip and they took full advantage of getting on the scoreboard first. After a trio of Demon batters got on base via walk or hit by pitch, Alexa Mitchell got the party started with a two RBI single in the first inning to give the Demons an early 2-0 lead. Megan Mitchell followed suit of her sister by knocking in two runs of her own in the second off of a bases clearing double. The Sabers tried getting back into the contest managing a run in the fifth and sixth frame, but the Demon offense kept tacking on to their lead to claim the 7-2 win. The two Mitchell’s finished the night managing a pair of hits with two RBI. Offensive production combined with a stellar Molly Sparks in the circle spells doom for an opponent. That was the case on Thursday as Sparks went another seven strong innings giving up only two runs on eight hits and five strikeouts. Sparks seems to be pitching her best at the right time as she collected her third consecutive win where she has not gave up more than three runs.

The Sabers finished their season with a record of 10-30 as the Demons move to 21-17 and most importantly punch their ticket to the semifinal regional round. They will travel to Oskaloosa (27-12) on Saturday.
