The Washington Senior Awards were presented this past week including the male and female athletes of the year. Jessie Buchholz was honored as the female recipient and Trey Van Weelden was the male.

The award is voted on by all coaches of the district and given to the individual who has experienced the most athletic success in their high school career. The recipient also needs to have expressed a good sense of character and leadership in their community.

Van Weelden was a two-sport standout for the Demons in football and wrestling. On the gridiron he was awarded all-district defensive back and defensive player of the year honors for the team. As a wrestler he made his mark for the Demons by being a three-time state qualifier including a runner-up finish this past season.

Buchholz was the only female at the school to participate in three sports this past season including volleyball, soccer, and softball. In 2016 she was awarded all conference honors in softball and volleyball and this year led the soccer team in goals. In previous years she was a standout on the track as she was a two-time state qualifier and holds school records in the 100m hurdles and shuttle hurdle relay.

The pair, along with their fellow classmates, will graduate today at Washington High School. The two will pursue higher education, as Van Weelden will attend the University of Northern Iowa and Buchholz will enroll at the University of Missouri.
