August 1st is the date under consideration for a special election in the City of Washington to determine if residents would support or reject implementing a hotel-motel tax. At Tuesday’s Washington City Council meeting, Washington Chamber of Commerce director Michelle Redlinger stated the Chamber is willing to coordinate the efforts. The committee includes council members Millie Youngquist and Steven Gault. According to the Iowa Department of Revenue the tax is imposed on the gross receipts from the renting of sleeping rooms in hotels, motels, and inns. The council authorized staff to have bond attorneys draft the language that would appear on the ballot. That language will then be considered by the council at a meeting next month. Figures were not discussed at Tuesday’s meeting.
