The Washington Archery teams spent the weekend in the state capital competing in the 2017 Iowa State Tournament. The Washington High School, Middle School, and Lincoln Elementary School teams battled Friday and Saturday at the Richard O. Jacobson Exhibition Center. All three squads placed in the top 10 of their respective age divisions.
The Washington High School team placed sixth out of 23 teams with 3,308 points. Valley High School won the state championship with a score of 3,369 points. Freshman Samantha Mellinger recorded Washington’s top individual score with a 292 out of a possible 300 points. Her performance featured 22 bullseyes and was the second highest score among high school girls. Senior John Sands posted a 283 in his final high school shoot in Iowa, the 24th best high school boys’ score.
The Washington Middle School team finished in second place, out of 21 squads with 3,267 points. Albia won the tournament title by 46 points. Anna Miller posted the Demons’ top junior-high score of 283, the fifth best result in the middle school girls field. Curtis Stender placed ninth in the middle school boys division with 282 points.
The Lincoln Elementary School, the 13th best squad entering the event, placed seventh overall with 2,847 points. Bellevue won the elementary state championship with a score of 3,044. Makynna Morgan placed fifth with a score of 265. She recorded seven bullseyes.
All three teams have qualified for the 2017 Centershot Ministries National Tournament in Louisville, Kentucky, held May 10-12.
