A busy first week of competition ended with a dual tournament championship for the No. 10 Washington Demon wrestling team. Washington grappled four squads in the annual Cascade dual tournament on Friday. The Demons bested wrestlers from Bellevue, Cascade, Maquoketa Valley, and MFL MarMac to claim the title for a second straight year.
The most convincing victory came against Bellevue. Washington scored with eight pins, a major decision, a decision, and three forfeits for a 73-4 win. Three Demon wrestlers had wins by fall in less than a minute. Austin Hazelett (145) opened the dual with a 50-second pin over Lucas Tennant. Tristin Westphal-Edwards (170) brought Justin Carrier to his back 31 seconds into their grapple. Kiowa Keith (138) closed the dual with a 47-second pin over Cade Smith. Andrew Waite (152), Trey Van Weelden (160), Lane Keeler (220), Garrett Ikerd (120), and Kyle Anderson (126) also tallied wins by fall.
Cascade suffered a similar fate versus Washington. The Demons recorded six pins, two decisions, and five forfeits in a 72-6 victory over the Cougars. Westphal-Edwards (170), Colin Murphy (182), Mitchell Huisenga (285), Garrett Ikerd (120) and Hazelett (145) each posted first period pins.
Washington rallied in their match versus Maquoketa Valley. The Demons lost three of the first four matches of the dual to fall behind, 18-3. Washington went on to win nine of the final 10 matches to prevail, 54-21. Walker Ikerd (113) and Keith (138) posted wins by fall. Six of Washington’s 10 match victories came via forfeit.
Washington’s toughest competition came from MFL MarMac. The Demons trailed 33-29 entering the final two matches of the dual. Hazelett (145) gave Washington the lead for good on a first period pin of Brady Olson. Andrew Waite (152) won a 7-0 decision over Riley Doeppke to secure the victory, 38-33.
Washington ended the week with nine dual victories. The Demons open their Southeast Conference title defense Thursday, traveling to Fairfield for a league dual versus the Trojans.
