This time of year, yard waste such as leaves and branches can start to pile up in people’s lawns, and many might be considering disposing of it using fire. The City of Wellman reminds potential yard waste burners the town has rules regarding burning. Landscape waste burning is permitted within city limits, but only on your own property and it must be at least 50 feet away from any structure or building. Additionally, any large scale burning used for clearing, grubbing, or construction operations must be conducted at least one-quarter mile from any building inhabited by someone besides the person doing the burning. Citizens of Wellman are prohibited from burning trash, yard waste, or rubbish on any curb, gutter, or paved surface without the city’s prior approval.
While burning yard waste is acceptable in the city under those guidelines, the city encourages people to recycle the waste. According to Wellman City Clerk Beth VanWinkle, special recycling bags can be purchased from the city for 50 cents each. Every Monday morning, city volunteers pick up the bags of yard waste to be recycled. She added, they can take larger branches, provided they are stacked in a way that makes them easy to be taken. The city does permit recreational fires, such as those for cooking, heating, or ceremonies, as long as they comply with emission guidelines established by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.
