Multiple turnovers forced and a trio of 100-yard rushing performances helped the No. 9 Sigourney-Keota Cobras (8-1) claim a spot in the Class 1A football playoffs. Two postseason hopefuls collided in Sigourney Friday when the Cobras hosted the Wilton Beavers (7-2). Sigourney-Keota forced six Wilton turnovers and compiled 421 rushing yards and four touchdowns in a 35-28 victory.

Cobra seniors accounted for five of the six turnovers forced. Alec Schuster led the way with three fumble recoveries. Noah Boender returned a first-quarter interception 35 yards for a touchdown. Noah Reeves also caught an interception, while sophomore Tristan Sypherd came away with a fumble recovery.

Three athletes tallied 100 percent of the Cobras’ offensive yards. Senior Avery Moore carried the football 23 times for 172 yards and a touchdown. Sophomore Carson Crawford posted 25 rushing attempts for 128 yards and three touchdowns. Junior Luke Greiner added 121 rushing yards on 21 attempts.

The victory improves Sigourney-Keota’s record to 8-1 overall, capturing the second playoff spot from Class 1A District 4. The Cobras start their postseason run in Pella Friday, battling the No. 2 Pella Christian Eagles (9-0). Sigourney-Keota conquered Pella Christian in district action last season, 52-35.
