The City of Riverside is in the planning phase to have a bronze statue of Captain James T. Kirk crafted and placed in the city park. Riverside is known as the future birthplace of the Star Trek Captain, and according to Voyage Home Museum Director Ken McCracken, the city has tried in the past to raise funds for a statue. Previous efforts led to the creation of a wooden statue which can be found in the museum, but this time they’re wanting to create a bronze statue that can be outside in all weather.
The total estimated cost for the statue is between $30,000 and $35,000, and the city has set up a GoFundMe account to raise money. It was given an initial boon in the form of a $10,000 grant from the city’s Hotel/Motel Grant Program. They will also be submitting a $15,000 grant request to the Washington County Riverboat Foundation to further the project. The city accepted a bid from Memorials by Michel in Solon for the creation of the statue, and McCracken indicated they’ve begun work on the miniature clay model. He estimates the statue will be completed within the next three years, though it’s dependent on the rate at which funds are raised. To contribute to the GoFundMe account, click the link below.
