A fireworks accident this fourth of July has forced an annual season opening volleyball tournament to change venues. Keota Community Schools discovered a 15 by 20 foot hole in the roof above the district’s high school gymnasium. While the gym floor appears to have sustained little damage, Keota superintendent Dennis Phelps says the process of replacing the gyms roof won’t be finished until October.

The Eagles’ volleyball team normally hosts the in their high school gym. Phelps says the English Valleys School District in North English has agreed to host this year’s Keota Volleyball Tournament, which features six teams from the region. The team’s participating in the tournament include the Keota Eagles, the Mid-Prairie Golden Hawks, the Lone Tree Lions, the Highland Huskies, the Tri County Trojans, and the English Valleys Bears.

The six teams are split up into a pair of three team pools, with each team will play two matches in pool play. Pool A features Lone Tree, English Valleys, and Tri County, while Pool B showcases Keota, Mid-Prairie, and Highland. The top team from each section advances to the championship match and the second place teams will play in a consolation match.

The Mid-Prairie Golden Hawks won last year’s event, defeating Lone Tree 25-12, 25-19 in the tournament championship match. First matches of the Keota Volleyball tournament are set to serve at 4 p.m. Monday at the English Valleys High School gym.
