The longest conference roadtrip of the season took place last night for the Washington Demon softball team (9-23 overall). The Demons traveled to Joyce Park in Keokuk Monday for a Southeast Conference doubleheader versus the No. 7 Chiefs (18-13 overall). Keokuk completed the season sweep of Washington, taking game one, 6-2, and winning game two, 9-5.
Game one was heard on FM 106.1 and KCIIRadio.com as Washington jumped out to a first inning lead, scoring two runs on three hits versus Keokuk’s Makenzie Pezley. Sophomore Megan Mitchell drove in the runs on a two-out double, platting senior Makenzie Knutson and eighth grader Kinsey Duwa. Washington offense collected one hit the rest of the game. The scored stayed intact until the bottom of the fifth inning. Keokuk batted around in the frame, scoring four runs on five hits, taking a 4-2. Keokuk added two insurance runs in the sixth, pushing their advantage to 6-2. After allowing a two-out double to junior Jessie Buchholz in the third, Pezley retired the following 13 Demon batters, closing the door on a 6-2 victory. Freshman Molly Sparks took the loss for Washington, allowing six runs on 12 hits, walking one and striking out three.
Keokuk completed the season sweep of Washington in game two, winning 9-5. The game was tied at 2-2 heading into the bottom of the fourth. The Chiefs scored four runs in the fourth and three more in the bottom of the sixth to expand their lead. Washington got single runs in the second, third, and fifth innings, and scored two runs in the seventh before being retired. Mitchell and sophomore Brooke Stout drove in two runs a piece for the Demons.
The set of losses drops Washington’s overall record to 9-23. The Demons return to the diamond Thursday, hosting their final Southeast Conference doubleheader of the season versus the No. 9 Mount Pleasant Panthers (19-7 overall).
