The final competition of the season saw the Washington Archery team travel to the East Coast last week. For the first time in program history, the Demon archers competed in the National Archery in the Schools Program’s Worlds International Bowhunting Organization’s 3D Challenge was this past weekend in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, pitting Washington against the best archers from around the globe.

Washington’s archery team closed the season with a collective score of 1,381, placing them 19th out of 40 high schools. The Demons’ pair of seniors closed their high school archery careers with identical scores. Jade Wells and Joseph Dalziel finished in a tie for the team’s top score, scoring 279 out of a possible 300 points and each recorded 15 bulleyes. Wells’ score ranked her 26th out of 166 high school girls competing, while Dalziel placed 47th out of 170 boys.

Eighth grader Samantha Mellinger, who qualified for the World’s 3D Shoot as an individual, scored a 272 with eight bullseyes. Her performance ranked 53rd out of 253 middle school shooters.

Three other Washington archers concluded their seasons with scores of 270 or higher. Freshman Griffin Wood placed third on the team, recording a score of 278 and 15 bullseyes. Junior Grace Shafer posted a score of 273 and 14 bullseyes. Finally, sophomore Kylee Porter concluded her season with a 270, scoring 11 bullseyes.

Anamosa High School won the Worlds team championship, posting 1,454 points.
