Louisa County is preparing for an influx of visitors when RAGBRAI comes at the end of July by cleaning its roads. The Louisa County Conservation Board along with the Rural Hometown Pride Committee has sponsored two road cleaning events in the county. Conservationist Katie Hammond said those who helped with the clean-up were amazed at the difference and it’s made them want to keep the roads clean. She hopes the more people they can get involved in the clean-up, the less likely people will be to litter in the future.
So far 97 people have helped, covering 41 miles of road, filling 79 bags of trash as well as picking up six televisions, 77 tires, and one mattress for a total of around 2,000 pounds of garbage. The clean-up will continue until July 30th, though no more large-scale cleaning events are scheduled. Hammond said people can get orange trash bags and vests from the conservation office and pick up trash on their own.
