Iowa’s corn and soybeans are ahead of last year’s crop. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s weekly report, 90% of Iowa’s corn has emerged, 92% in southeast Iowa. Corn is about two days ahead of last year and five days ahead of normal. Soybeans are about nine days ahead of last year with 88 percent of it planted across the Hawkeye State. In southeast Iowa, 87% of soybeans are planted with 61% emerged. And while rain slowed progress last week, the first cutting of alfalfa hay was 35% complete in Iowa, five days ahead of the five-year average.
