Mother’s Day will be celebrated this Sunday. The holiday began in the United States in 1914. There are many options to find gifts for mom locally. Director of Main Street Washington, Sarah Grunewaldt explains shopping locally has an impact on our communities with 72 cents of every $1 spent staying in the community when you shop locally, whereas if you shop in another community or online only 40 cents of that dollar comes back to the local area. That money goes into property taxes, paying for public safety and schools, and helps pay local people’s wages. Flowers, clothing, candles, specialty food and drinks can all be purchased in downtown Washington or Kalona.
