Several area track teams spent Monday evening in rural Riverside, competing in the Highland Co-Ed Track Meet. The field consisted of boys’ and girls’ squads from Danville, Mid-Prairie, Highland, Keokuk, Lone Tree, Louisa-Muscatine, Tipton and WACO.

The Highland Huskies boys’ track team won four events during their home meet, including the long jump, the 1600 meter run, the 3200 meter run, and the distance medley. Senior Keiffer Sexton continued his success in the distance events, clocking the best mile and two mile times of the meet. His one mile time of 4:34.19 was a full eight second better than second place finisher Luke Sigler of Mid-Prairie. Sexton crossed the finish line in the two mile race at 10:20.17, 54 seconds better than the competition. Junior Billy Burton topped the long jump event, propelling himself 20’5.5″. Finally, the distance medley crew of Burton, Chase Rath, Trey Lasek, and Sexton clocked a time of 3:45.24, five seconds better than Mid-Prairie for the event title. Highland finished third in the boys’ team results, earning 66 points.

The Highland girls’ track squad didn’t earn any outright event championships, but accounted for several second place finishes. Freshman Aly Stokes finished in a tie for the top high jump mark, clearing 4’10”. Stokes also vaulted herself 16’2.25″ in the girls’ long jump competition, nearly a full inch shorter than Louisa-Muscatine’s Lani Hillyard for first place honors. Junior Kelsey Hora ran the 400 meter dash in 1:01.86, a second behind first place finisher Alyssa Pfadenhauer of Danville for the event championship. Sophomore Bailey Harmston completed the 400 meter hurdles in 1:17.44, two seconds off Tipton sophomore Tiffany Schott for first place. Finally, the 4×400 meter crew of Stokes, Murphy Beinhart, Sydney Black, and Hora came away with a time of 4:28.46, eight seconds behind Danville for the top spot. Highland finished fourth in the team standings, compiling 77 points.

The WACO Warrior boys’ track squad came away from the meet with three top finishes, featuring the 100 meter dash, the 200 meter dash, and the 4×110 meter shuttle hurdle relay team. Senior Bryce Achen was featured in all three event championships. His 100 meter dash time of 11.46 topped the boys’ field by a half second. His 200 meter dash performance of 23.07 seconds was a second and a half better than the competition. The shuttle hurdle relay team of Beau Beckler, Jorge Chacon, Colton Horak, and Achen completed the event in 1:02.33, four-tenths of a second better than the field. The Warrior boys’ track team took fourth place, earning 58 points.

The WACO Warrior girls’ track team came away with the event title in the 4×100 meter shuttle hurdle. The crew of McKenna White, Clara Schmitz, Kiana Miller, and Kasey Sutton clocked a time of 1:13.94, nearly a full second better than the competition field. WACO placed seventh in the team standings, recording 46 points.

The Lone Tree Lion boys’ track team came away with the 800 meter run championship. Sophomore Brock Smith completed his half mile run in 2:06.71, nearly a full second better than the competition field. The Lions took fifth place in the team competition, scoring 56 points.

The Lone Tree girls’ track team didn’t garner any event champions last night, and only scored one second place finish in the meet. The Lions’ 4×100 meter shuttle hurdle crew of Emily Feldman, Devyn Alt, Zoie Simonsen, and Hailey Comer crossed the finish line in 1:14.80, less than a second behind WACO for first place. The Lady Lions finished in eighth place in the team standings, scoring 40 points.

The Mid-Prairie track teams swept the team championships Monday. The Golden Hawk boys’ squad won the meet with 140 points, while the girls’ came away with the team title with 106 points.

Highland, Lone Tree, and WACO’s track teams will compete against each other again this Thursday at the Southeast Iowa Super Conference North track meet hosted by Wapello Community Schools. First events are set for 4:30 p.m. Thursday.
