Washington’s prom theme Saturday night is “The Great Gatsby.” In preparation of the festivities, students attended a mock fatal accident caused by a driver under the influence of marijuana and then a trial that followed Wednesday. Senior Gracie Cleverly, who was one of the student actors who was injured, said she hopes people realize it is a serious problem high school students deal with. She adds, “There are other ways to have fun than doing illegal things, like you can just be weird on your own and that’s how prom in high school should be.”
Senior Cale Rausch said he hopes his classmates take something away from the experience and make good decisions.
Area emergency personnel aided in the assembly including Washington County Ambulance, Washington Fire Department, Washington Police Department, Washington Rescue and Iowa State Patrol. The Grand March will be held from 7:30 to 9 p.m. and the dance will be from 9 to 11 p.m. After prom will be held at the high school from 11:30 p.m. to 3:30 a.m. and a hypnotist will be on site.
