A special election had residents in the cities of Kalona and Ainsworth cast ballots on two issues. In Kalona, 604 people voted which equals 36.47% of the registered voters in the city’s limits. The residents voted 400 to 204 to approve $3.9 million in bonds for work on the community center. Sue Meeks, elections administrator for Washington County, said she felt it was “a very good” turnout in Kalona. In their regular city elections in 2011 and 2015 the turnout was only about 5%

Just over 26% of Ainsworth’s registered voter pool took part in the election to fill a seat on the city council. Dawn Stewart won the seat with 55% of those votes.
