The postseason run for the Washington Demon boys’ basketball team (7-16 overall) ended in the tournament’s opening round. The Demons traveled to Xavier High School in Cedar Rapids for the Class 3A District 9 semifinal clash versus the Clear Creek Amana Clippers (12-10 overall). Efficent free throw shooting in the fourth quarter propelled the Clippers into the district title game, winning 75-71.

Clear Creek Amana converted 19 of their 21 free throw attempts, including nine made in the fourth quarter. Clipper senior Jake Neubauer posted a team-best 26 points.

Washington senior Derek Anding poured in a game-high 30 points in his final game in a Demon uniform. He converted all 11 of his free throw attempts. Junior Bryce Sinn and sophomore Jack Redlinger each contributed 12 points.

The loss marks the final game of head coach Bryce Smeins’ career in Washington. Smeins is one of 24 Demon teachers and administrators who accepted early retirement packages from the district.

Washington’s season ends with a 7-16 overall record. The Demons will lose Anding, Jack Giardino, Dakota Suchan, and Ethan Hansen to graduation.
