Several area wrestlers will compete in championship Saturday of the 2016 Iowa High School Individual State Wrestling Tournament.

Washington junior Trey Van Weelden (152) had an eventful day in the Class 2A bracket, dropping his quarterfinal match by an 8-2 decision against West Liberty’s Joe Kelly. He bounced back in the consolation round, defeating PCM’s Wes Cummings by a 5-2 decision. He dropped his final match of the day, a 5-2 decision to Davenport Assumptions Nick Johnson. Van Weelden’s record now sits at 47-4 overall and will wrestle in today’s 7th place match versus Central Decatur’s Kade Kelso. The two met in the first round of the tournament with Van Weelden winning by a 3-1 decision.

A pair of Columbus/Winfield-Mount Union wrestlers will also battle in 7th place matches at the Well today. Josh Keller (113) opened his day in the second round of the consolation bracket, advancing past Creston/Orient-Macksburg’s Jacob Goodson by fall 1:04 into their match. In the consolation’s third round, the Wildcat senior lost to Webster City’s Drake Doolittle by a 12-2 major decision. Keller is set to compete in the 7th place match today in Des Moines versus Davenport Assumption’s Jacob Felderman.

Tucker Morrison (170) dropped into the consolation bracket after falling in the championship quartefinal round against Creston/Orient-Macksburg’s Chase Shiltz by a 10-2 major decision. In his first consolation match, he secured a spot in the medal round by defeating Solon’s Dillon Diltz by a 3-1 decision. Morrison fell in the third round of the consolation bracket by a 5-4 decison against Glenwood’s Anthony Sherry. He will finish his season in the 7th place match today versus Iowa Falls-Alden’s Michael Kent.

Highland’s twin brothers will both battle for a state title today in Des Moines. Bryce West (120) won his championship quarterfinal match by an 11-2 major decision versus Missouri Valley’s Connor Lange. He won his semifinal bout by technical fall 19-3 against Westwood-Sloan’s Kody Berg. Bryce West will battle Southeast Warren/Melcher-Dallas Brady Kyner for the 120 pound state title today.
Drew West (126) pinned his way to the championship match, dropping Nodaway Valley’s Ben Freese in 2:11 in the quartefinal round. He pinned Dike-New Hartford’s Kody Kugel in 2:52 in the semifinal round to secure a spot in the championship match. Drew West will battle Underwood’s Alex Thompsen for the 126 pound state title today.

Sigourney/Keota’s Kaleb Reeves will wrestle on the final day of the state wrestling tournament. Reeve’s opened Friday in the consolation semifinal round versus Bellevue’s Mason Lyons, defeating him by fall 1:55 into the match. He would fall in the consolation’s third round by 16-8 major decision versus B-G-M’s Colton Massengale. Reeves will battle for 7th place today against Don Bosco-Gilbertville’s Walker Even
