Two longtime Southeast Iowa Superconference rivals will square off Thursday in the opening round of class 1A district play in Lone Tree, when Iowa Mennonite School travels to face the Lions.
IMS enters tonight’s game with an overall record of 12-10. In their last game Iowa Mennonite fell to Van Buren on the road 54-47 in the Southeast Iowa Superconference Shootout on Friday. Nick Yutzy led the way for IMS with 14 points, Eli Gingerich had 13. On the season Gingerich leads IMS on the scoresheet at 18 points per game, second best in the Superconference North division. Gingerich also holds the team lead with 139 assists, second best in league play and ninth best in the state, his 98 rebounds are also best on the IMS team this year.
Lone Tree enters tonight’s game with an overall record of 16-5. The Lions finished conference play a mark of 12-4, sharing the Superconference North crown with Highland. In their last game Lone Tree fell at No. 3 in class 1A Danville 78-50 in the Southeast Iowa Superconference Shootout Friday. Dawson Swails had a team high 14 points, Brock Smith added 13. This season Lone Tree is led in scoring by Jovonte Squires at 15 points per game, sixth best in the Superconference. Squires also holds the team lead with 164 assists, that’s also the top mark in the conference and the fourth highest total in all of 1A. Niko Gosnell has pulled in 124 rebounds this season to lead Lone Tree, he’s seventh in the conference in the stat.
Lone Tree swept the regular season series from IMS this year, winning 53-49 at Hillcrest Union on January 5th and beating Iowa Mennonite 66-52 in the regular season finale on February 5th in Lone Tree.
