The Iowa Mennonite School boys basketball team will participate in the Southeast Iowa Superconference Shootout tonight when they travel to Keosauqua to battle Van Buren.
IMS enters tonight’s event with an overall record of 12-9 on the year. Iowa Mennonite finished with a 9-7 record in the North Division of the Southeast Iowa Superconference, in fifth place, leaving them to cross over against the Warriors who finished in fifth place in the South Division of the Superconference with a 7-7 mark in league play. In their last game IMS beat Mediapolis on Tuesday 56-47, led by Eli Gingerich with 20 points, Jacob Schmeider added 12. On the year Gingerich leads IMS averaging 18 points per game, tied for the top spot in the conference with Bradley Wachtel of Louisa-Muscatine. Gingerich leads Iowa Mennonite with 136 assists on the year, second in the conference. Drake Brezina leads IMS with 86 total rebounds.
Van Buren comes into tonight with an overall record of 12-8. The Warriors topped Holy Trinity Catholic 58-55 in their last game Tuesday. Will Mertens had 27 points and 14 rebounds, Austin Bartholomew had 17 points for the Warriors. On the year Mertens leads the team and the South Division, averaging 24 points per game. He also holds the team lead and is fourth in the south with 87 assists. Mertens is the top rebounder for the Warriors and the South Division with 282 boards on the year. Action between Iowa Mennonite and the Warriors begins at around 7:30 this evening. Other area matchups in the Superconference Shootout include: Winfield-Mt. Union at Holy Trinity Catholic, Wapello at Central Lee, Columbus visiting WACO and in the headline doubleheader at Southeast Community College in Burlington, Highland will challenge Burlington, Notre Dame in game one and in the two division champions will square off in the nightcap with Lone Tree battling No. 3 in class 1A Danville.
