Iowa’s first Pregnancy Risk Assessment Survey, or PRAMS, has been released. The Iowa Department of Public Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released the data, which they started collecting in 2013. More than 5,000 Iowa mothers were asked to provide information about their experiences before, during and after pregnancy. The first PRAMS data book is for the 2013 calendar year, when there were just over 39,000 live births in the state. During that year, 20,667 mothers reported their pregnancy was planned and nearly 31,000 reported primarily putting their baby to sleep on his or her back – the safest position for infant sleep. Also, across Iowa 2,252 mothers reported some form of intimate partner violence.
In Washington County in 2013, there were 28 reported teen births. IDPH explains because it is the first year of data, trends aren’t available yet.
