Washington County Sheriff Jerry Dunbar is warning residents of an IRS phone scam. According to Dunbar, residents throughout the state are receiving calls from someone claiming to be with the Internal Revenue Service. The caller claims there is a lawsuit or warrant for the person’s arrest. Dunbar advises, the IRS will not call or email people. Also, the caller identification shows the call coming from Washington, DC. If a phone message is left from this scam, do not return the call. Dunbar shares it is best to hang up and not give any information. If you did give information, contact your local law enforcement and notify them of the situation. The scam has been reported in Washington County, with seven reports Monday morning alone.
