Two options for Washington’s City Hall, fire department and police department were again discussed by the Washington City Council. At Tuesday’s meeting, the council discussed what to do with the old library building and the potential for building a new fire station while keeping the police department and city hall together in one, shared building. City Administrator Brent Hinson shared he did ask bond attorneys about the referendum threshold for a new fire station, while keeping the police department and City Hall under one roof. They stated it can be defined as two separate projects, meaning a bond of about $1.8 million will potentially be needed to construct a new fire station next to the current municipal building.

Council member Kathy Salazar said there needs to be a plan for the old library before moving forward with a bond referendum. Councilman Bob Shepherd, who’s term ends at the end of the year, stated he’d like to see the old library used by the City.

Hinson explained the City did try to sell the building but had little interest, however there were many parameters set for the use of the building at that time. He said they could try to market it again with fewer strings attached.

No official action was taken by council at Tuesday’s meeting on the matter.
