Hunters are in early split archery season currently, and preparing for shotgun season early next month for deer in Iowa. So far this year, hunters have harvested 22,225 deer statewide. In Washington County 275 have been harvested, 132 of which were does, 120 were antlered bucks and 22 were button bucks. Clayton County, in northeast Iowa along the Mississippi River, has had the most deer harvested with hunters reporting 926 from that county.
Iowans can donate any legally taken, field-dressed deer to meat lockers as part of the HUSH, Help Us Stop Hunger program. According to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, last year 3,326 deer were donated, which helped generate more than 530,000 meals. For a list of participating lockers click here.
