All train traffic has been shut down on lines between Danville and New London due to a derailment Monday morning. According to the Des Moines County Sheriff’s Office, authorities responded to the collision near Highway 34 and 210th Avenue at 8:08 a.m. A road grader owned by Cessford Construction was struck by a train.
The man driving the grader, 39-year-old Brian Rhan of Ferguson, was taken by Burlington Ambulance to Great River Medical Center. According to Burlington Northern Sante Fe officials, Rhan suffered non-life threatening injuries.
In total, 19 loaded coal cars and two locomotives were derailed. Iowa State Patrol, Danville Fire and Rescue, and Burlington Fire Department assisted at the scene. The sheriff’s office advises the accident is still under investigation.
