Entering the halfway mark of the 2015 season, the WACO Warrior football team (2-2 overall 2-0 Class A District 6) has already won more games than they did all of last year. Back-to-back 340-yard rushing performances by the Warriors’ offense has lead to district victories. WACO’s rushing attack amounted 340 yards and five touchdowns in a 36-8 triumph of Van Buren (0-4 overall).
Head coach Chad Edeker says the team’s attitude hasn’t changed from years past but they are starting to find the winning touch again, “When weren’t winning we were playing well and the kids always had a great attitude.” Edeker said, “Being 0-2 to start the year, the attitude wasn’t ever down. They knew where they needed to get to and they just kept working at it.”
Last season wasn’t what Warrior fans are used to. WACO finished the 2014 season 1-8 despite averaging over 21 points per game. The Warriors did give up a district worst 33.5 points per game.
WACO’s defense has shown vast improvement over the past two weeks. After giving up a combined 111 points in losses to Columbus and BGM, the Warriors have given up 43 points in victories over New London and Van Buren. The eight points allowed against Van Buren is the best defensive output by WACO since 2013, when the Warriors defeated the Winfield-Mount Union Wolves 34-8 in Winfield.
WACO looks to push their winning streak to three games when they host the Cardinal Comets tonight for the team’s homecoming game. The Warriors outlasted the Comets last season in a shootout, 52-50, in Eldon.
Kickoff of tonight’s district clash between the Warriors and Comets is set for 7:30 p.m. at WACO High School.
