An autopsy was conducted following an officer involved shooting in Washington County early Sunday morning near Wellman. On Monday, the Iowa Office of the State Medical Examiner conducted an autopsy on Martin Hammen and the result of the autopsy revealed he died from a single gunshot wound to the chest.

Sunday, area authorities responded to a house fire at 1149 Highway 22, Wellman. Deputies reported Hammen waived a handgun in a threatening manner in the direction of deputies and did not comply with orders.

A 20-year law enforcement veteran, Sgt. Kirk Bailey was identified as the deputy who shot Hammen. The Division of Criminal Investigation, with assistance from the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, is continuing to conduct an investigation.
