Iowa has 544 public libraries, 351 of which are accredited, including the Washington Public Library. Iowa Library Services announced the recent state accreditation, which is valid until 2018. The local library was first accredited in 2012 after moving into the fully handicap accessible building. The library is recognized for its library operations, including governance and funding, staffing, collection, services, access, facilities and public relations.

Libraries that are accredited receive a higher rate of compensation through the Iowa Library Services’ Enrich Iowa program, as well as a certificate signed by Governor Terry Branstad, Lieutenant Governor Kim Reynolds, State Librarian Michael Scott, and Iowa Commission of Libraries Chairperson Brandie Ledford.
