As the school year approaches, Iowa Department of public health is reminding parents that oral health is important for a child’s overall health and school readiness. Tooth decay can impact a child’s ability to learn, speak, eat and sleep. Iowa’s I-Smile School program provides free dental sealants, oral screenings and fluoride varnishes in many of Iowa’s elementary and middle schools.

In Washington County the sealant program is offered to third and sixth grade students and in Henry County it is offered to third and seventh grade students. Also, Washington County sites provide the fluoride varnish program at local preschools and day cares, WIC clinics and ACCESS to Care clinics.
