With high temperatures and higher heat index values recently, producers are reminded to take extra care of their livestock. Heat index values are forecast to be over 100 degrees.

Iowa State University Extension and Outreach beef veterinarian Grant Dewell reminds beef cattle producers that properly preparing for these weather conditions is vital to maintaining herd health. In the summer months, finish working cattle early and during heat waves don’t work cattle at all. Be sure the cattle have plenty of fresh clean water, during hot and humid conditions consumer water is the only way cattle can cool down.

Another way to help keep the heard healthy, is to feed 70 percent of their ration in the afternoon. Lastly, ensure cattle have ventilation, shade or access to sprinklers.
