So far this month, temperatures in the area have been below normal, impacting gardens. According to horticulturists with Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, the unfavorable weather conditions are the primary reason for blossom drop in tomatoes. The swing from high daytime temperatures to low nighttime temperatures below 55 degrees is interfering with pollination and causing blossom drop. The ideal growing conditions for tomatoes are day time temperatures between 70 and 85 degrees.

Strong winds and dry soil conditions also stress tomato plants. It is recommended to deeply water tomato plants once a week during dry weather. Horticulturists advise fruit set should increase when temperatures moderate.
